This battery is named after General Richard, Lord Airey, who was Governor of Gibraltar from 1865 to 1870. During the Crimean war he was quartermaster-general to Lord Raglan and was party to the fateful destruction of the Light Brigade at Balaclava. During what subsequently looked like an Army cover-up, he was exonerated of charges of inefficiency in that war. The battery which stands at a height of 1358 feet above sea level was started on the 25th July 1890 and completed 1st of March 1891 at a cost of £885. The original gun was a 6 inch BL on a Vavaseur centre pivot mounting but on 23rd October 1897 work began on a position for one 9.2 inch BL mark X gun on a mark V mounting which was completed on 31st March 1900 at a cost of £3861.
This view was taken from O’Haras Battery.
Unlike O’Haras Battery, the gun at this battery is in a very corroded state. It could be argued that this gun would be of less interest to military historians and more interest to those studying corrosion.
