This is a guided tour of part of the Rocks WW2 tunnels. The tour starts at Hay’s Level close to the Moorish Castle in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. It is available during the Nature Reserve opening hours and has a separate entry charge.
Please visit all of the sections above to read the extensive amount of information about these tunnels.
Hay’s Level is the starting point of the GUIDED WALKING TOUR of WW2 Tunnels in this area of the Rock.
If you are a Veteran who has personal knowledge of these specific tunnels or gun batteries, please contact us. We would like to learn more from you.
The greatest, single British military tunnelling project carried out by army personnel is the tunnelling in Gibraltar during World War Two, when diamond-drill blasting was used by the army for the first time.
The Hay’s Level entrance is one of many entrance and exit points leading into over 30 miles of interconnected tunnels. Most of the system is still under M.O.D. jurisdiction, however, a significant amount can be visited, such as this WW2 section.
The entrance tunnels at Hay’s Level are large enough for vehicles, as can be seen in the photograph above. The two photographs below show the R.E.M.E chamber, with a three storey high ceiling height. The Black and White photograph (courtesy of The Imperial War Museum) shows the chamber under construction. There is in fact another larger R.E.M.E. chamber elsewhere in the Rock, however, it is under M.O.D. jurisdiction.
The large chamber in the photograph above was used as a refectory for feeding troops on a 24hr basis. The chamber below was the cookhouse (kitchen).
